Well, after exhaustive work on PRs, wills and court records researchers have concluded with a reasonable degree of certainty: Robert and Ellinora are a red herring – we don’t know anything about them other than that they had two children in 1640-2 Robert b 1608 was a single man who left a lot of property in Hardingham to his only surviving brother Gilbert in his 1687 will, which is critical. (It is presumed that Henry b 1615, between Robert and Gilbert, didn’t survive). He was by then called Robert of Houghton, although we can’t verify this from PRs etc Gilbert and Mary tried very hard to have a son called Robert in memory of Gilbert’s brother but failed three times. I made an earlier error in thinking this was in honour of Gilbert’s father. The only less than perfect bit of this is that Gilbert (This Gilbert) had 10 children the first when he was between 42 and the last at 61. I have debated this with experts and they have had several similar situations. There may be a first wife or medical issues but otherwise they think this is pretty solid The will clearly says Robert was single and that he leaves all his property in Hardingham to “my loving brother Gilbert”. I would like to find Henry’s death to justify him receiving nothing. Robert also makes a bequest to “Faith the wife of Ezekias of Hardingham” who was b abt 1628 and d 1696. Not clear why she should get the bequest but her husband nothing…. |
