BET 1522 AND 1532 | Hardingham, Norfolk, England |
Dob chnaged to abt 1500 from 1474 by Wrc by email 10.9.09. Dod alsochanged to bef 1532 (source John Cushing's will, which I have not seenbut clearly wrc has). Alice's dob confirmed as abt 1474 in IGI See email corrspondence below with Warren Cushing: Philip I love your persistent challenges. It keeps me on my toes.First off, I do believe that both girls in question were named AliceClive. I believe this was a transposing error that has never beencorrected for all these years, and that is why Alice Cuve's parentswere never found. There are a few references to a father namedRichard Cuve Esq, but I have been unable to determine its validity. However, there is ample evidence to support Thomas and Margaret Cliveas the parents of Alice Clive b: 15 May 1475.So that is why I haverevised my data somewhat. The other Alice Clive b: abt 1474, abt1481, abt 1496, et al are all personal guesses made by the individualsoffering the information. None of them has any supportable evidence. The ABT is the big clue that the dates are estimated. Quite oftennowadays some gedcoms leave that important piece of information out.The dates are based on John (Cushyn, Cushying) Cushing's birth of abt1496. It is common practice to add 4 years to approximate the wife'sbirthdate and 20 years from her birth to determine the birth of herfirst child. Each additional child is given an extra 2 years gracefrom the previous one. This process just helps to pinpoint possiblemarriages and actual birthdates later on. Something else I have beenchecking up on is that the first Alice Clive may have been adopted byRichard Cuve and thus the ensuing confusion. Also another possibilityis that she was previously married to a Cuve (if indeed they are avalid family). I still prefer to believe that Clive is the propersurname (because of Thomas and Margaret) although I have even seenOlive and Cuve suggested. All I have on John's will is: He marriedfirst, Alice, daughter of Richard CLIVE of Hingham, and second, Rose___. His will was dated 13 March 1532 and proved in Prerogative Court,London, 11 May 1532. From this I determined that his first wife AliceClive died after the birth of Edmund in about 1522/23 as he wasmarried to Rose at the time of his death. But, why on earth is hisdeath date recorded as 11 May 1539 and not 1532? This is anotherboondoggle that needs fixing. Regards Warren Cushing --- On Fri,9/11/09, Philip Cushing From: Philip Cushing Subject: RE: Alice Clive ADDENDA To: "'wr cushing'" Date: Friday, September 11, 2009, 9:57 AM Thanks. I dont want to be a pedant(!) but are we now saying there isan Alice Clive and an Alice Cuve or two Alice Clives? Can I pleasesee a copy or an extract of Johns will, referred to as evidence ofdifferent dod? When I looked at Ancestral File number HO9Z-VW forAlice Cuve, I found the original dob of 1474 , not your revised dob ofabt 1481. Can you please tell me what your source is to change dob,...and dod is? Visited Hardingham and Hingham earlier this week-Hingham church particularly nice. No legible gravestones. Spoke toHenry Edwards, local squire, whose family are heavily featured in theHardingham Church (5 generations local). No knowledge of any actualCushings in Hardingham but a trust called the Atkins and Cushen trustmade a donation to the church within the last 100 years. Other thanthat, nothing. Its also a sad state of affairs to see one vicarcovering 11 parish churches! Off to Norfolk Records office in 10days time Best wishes |
