BOSON II Comte d'Arles et de Provence

Texte

Notes -#5 of 9
PA February (under the direction of) - Provence from its origins to the year one thousand - Editions Ouest-France Université, 1989 - ( ISBN 2737304563 ) , one can read:
It was in 949, after the death of Hugh, that a new Count of Arles appeared, Boson, on whose identity historians have been very hesitant. He was eventually identified with Berthe's first husband, Hugues' niece, whom he would have repudiated in order to dissociate her fate from that of the Marquis' relatives at the time of his reversal of fortune. He would then have married Constance, an otherwise unknown person. He had two sons, Roubaud and Guillaume Boson (who) with his brother also called Guillaume, jointly exercised the county authority, still unique, as representatives of Conrad. Berthe, meanwhile, remarried the Count of Rodez

Boson II (born around 910 and died in 968 ), Count of Arles, Avignon and Provence (949-968)

His origin is controversial, although his life is relatively well known.

Hypothesis 1 : Boson II , son of Rotbold (Roubaud) or Rodboald d'Agel (mâconnais noble), made Count of Provence in 903 by Louis III the Blind .
The ancestry of this Rotbald remains unknown to us. However, historians consider that it could be the husband of a daughter of Ermengarde (daughter of Boson V of Provence ) and William I of Aquitaine ( cf. genealogy of the sovereigns of Provence here ). This hypothesis is based on the fact that the origin of a descendant of Boson of Arles (885-936) is for some historians rejected because this Boson would have had only daughters 1 .

For the historian Jean-Pierre Poly who supports this hypothesis, this county family set up by the Burgundians (ie Hugues d'Arles ) is probably from Septimania . His representative Boson would have been able to turn around in time (around 947 - 948 ?) by breaking off his marriage with Bertha , Hugh's niece, after the latter's reverses of fortune, then by marrying a Constance, who, although unknown 2 , was sufficiently illustrious to give her name to her granddaughter, Constance of Arles , wife of a king ofFrance 3 . Guilhem 's name worn by his brother and given to one of his sons probably evokes the Guilhelmides of Auvergne . And Conrad , the new king of Provence, would have found in Boson a count from a second-class family, less dangerous and ambitious, more likely to get on well with the Provençal notables 4 .

Hypothesis 2 : Boson II , grandson of Boson of Arles (885-936) by Rotbold the Elder (around 907-936), son of a first marriage of the latter.
From a first marriage (unidentified) preceding his marriage to Willa de Bourgogne in 912, Boson d'Arles had one child, Roubaud I OR Rotbold the Elder, also known as Rotbold de Spolete (c. 907 - 936 ) who married Ermengarde d'Aquitaine (daughter of Guillaume I of Aquitaine and of Engelberge de Vienne ) and was assassinated on the orders of her uncle King Hugh of Arles in 936, probably at the same time as her father during an attempted coup against the latter [ref. necessary] .

Hypothesis 3 : Boson II and Boson I , one and the same person
Some authors, like PA February 5 identify Boson I and Boson II , the father of Guillaume de Provence, as one and the same person; and as a result cause Boson I TO DIE IN 968. Against this assertion, some authors note that this Boson would have lived 73 years and would have had children at an advanced age, almost 60 years old.

Hypothesis 4 : This Boson, which replaces Boson of Arles in 931, could be Boson, son of Willa , daughter of Louis de Thurgovie, and of an unidentified father. Indeed, her uncle, Hugues de Troyes, second husband of Boson's mother, was invested in important functions in 928 when his uncle Hugues d'Arles left for Italy, governing the north of the kingdom of Provence as Marquess of Lyons. Boson and Hugues were brought up at the court of Arles in the 920s. In addition, Hugues de Troyes also had a full brothernamed Boson, born like him to Garnier and Theutberge, sister of Hugues d'Arles, King of Italy. This other Boson is also in the running for having been this Boson II of Arles, Count of Provence from 931 6 .

Biography
Despite these questions, most authors, especially those in favor of hypotheses 1 and 3, consider that Boson married, probably before 931 7 , Berthe d'Arles, the daughter of Boson d'Arles , the brother of Hugh . Under these conditions he could have been count of Arles from the departure of his father-in-law in Italy, or the death of the latter, either in 931 or 936 . These same historians agree on the fact that this marriage would have been broken at the time of the setbacks of Hugh, that is to say at the latest around the years 945 - 948 .

In 947, on the death of Hugh of Arles , Conrad took care to replace the latter and to master the powers of his successor or successors. This is why he split Provence into three counties, thus limiting the authority and resources of the new counts. Boson and his brother Guillaume, of uncertain origin, Burgundian or other 8 , take charge of the counties of Arles and Avignon. Count Griffon d'Apt having been quickly eliminated, the two brothers, without freeing themselves from the nominal authority of the king, became the true masters of the country.

Around 953 (or 942 ?) 9 Boson II married Constance, sometimes called Constance de Provence or Constante de Vienne , supposedly a daughter or sister of Charles Constantine , Count of Vienne . Boson II and Constance have two sons:

Rotboald I ( Roubaud ) (died 1008), Count of Arles and Provence
Guillaume I "the Liberator" ( circa 953 - 993), Count of Arles and Provence then Marquis of Provence in 975.
He died in 968 .
