| English Monarch. Born the son of Eadward I, King of Wessex and his third queen, Alfgiva. At about the age of 18, he succeeded to the title of King Eadmund I of England on October 27, 939 upon the death of his elder half brother, Aethelstan. He married Aelfgifu the following year, and with her had two sons, both of whom would rule in their own right. During his reign, the kingdom was plagued by Irish Viking raiders. He was forced to cede to them Northumbria but he succeeded in recapturing it in 944, takingadvantage of factionalism among the enemy leaders. In 945 he and King Malcolm I of Scotland signed a treaty of mutual military support, ensuring safe borders and peaceful relationships with Scotland. He married a second time in early 946 to Aethelflaed. Later that year, on St Augustine's Day at Pucklechurch, South Gloucestershire, he was murdered by an outlaw, Leofa, an exiled thief, who was then himself killed. Eadmund's sons were still minors of less than five years, and so he was succeeded by his brother. He has also been nicknamed the Deed-Doer, the Just, or the Magnificent.
