The Lewknors of Sussex, England The Lewknor (variantly spelled Lewkenor, Lewkenore, Lewknore, Leukenore, etc.) Family is a knightly family situated in Sussex that I have studied in connection with their being ancestors of Rose (Stoughton) Otis. 1. Sir Nicholas de Lewknor was born about 1211 and died before 1268. By an unknown wife he was the father of: 2. Sir Roger de Lewknor was born about 1244 and died about September 1295. He married Joan de Keynes, daughter of Richard de Keynes and Alice de Mankesy. They had one son: 3. Sir Thomas de Lewknor was born about 1270 and died about March 1336. He married Sibyl (---). They had four children: Roger, John, Pernel and Isabel. 4. Sir Roger de Lewknor was born about 1304 and died 14 March 1362. He married Katherine Bardolf, who died after 1362, daughter of Thomas Bardolf, 2nd Lord Bardolf, and his wife Agnes Grandison. They had two sons: Thomas and Richard. 5. Sir Thomas de Lewknor was born about 1347 and died in 1375. He married Joan D'Oyley, born about 1344 and died in 1393, daughter of Sir John D'Oyley and his wife Margaret de Tregoz. Joan married secondly John Cobham. Thomas and Joan had three children: Roger, John and Katherine. 6. Roger Lewknor, Esquire was born about 1374 and died before November 1400. He married Elizabeth Carew who died 25 September 1410, daughter of Sir Nicholas Carew and Isabel de la Mare. Elizabeth married secondly Robert Knyvet, Esquire. Roger and Elizabeth had three children: Thomas, John and Agnes. 7. Sir Thomas Lewknor was born about 1392 and died in 1452. He married in 1409, Philippa Dalyngridge, born about 1389 and died 2 October 1420, widow of Richard Berners, Esquire and daughter of Sir Walter Dalyngridge. Thomas married secondly Elizabeth Echingham, widow of Thomas Hoo and daughter of William Echingham and Alice Batisford. Thomas had one son by his first wife. 8. Sir Roger Lewknor was born about 1421 and died 23 July 1478 at Trotton, Sussex, England. He married before 1426, Eleanor Camoys, born about 1408 and died about 1445, daughter of Sir Richard Camoys and Joan Poynings. Roger married secondly about 1465,Mary West, born about 1432 and died 29 July 1473 at Trotton, Sussex, England, daughter of Sir Reynold West, 6th Baron de la Warre and Margaret Thorley. Roger married thirdly about 1477 Katherine Chidiock who died 9 April 1479. By his first wife, Roger was the father to: Thomas, Roger the Elder, William, Edward, Richard, John, and John and Margaret, Mary, Amy, and Elizabeth. By his second marriage he had three more sons: Reynold, Roger the younger, and George. Roger left a will at PCC 1 Logge. 9. Roger Lewknor, Esquire (the younger) son of Sir Roger Lewknor and Mary West, was born at Tr0tton, Sussex, England about 1466 and died about February 1509/10 at Tangmere, Sussex, England. He married about 1489, Anne (---) who died at Tangmere 28 November 1502. Roger and Anne had eight children: Joan, Anna, Clemence, Roger, Edmund, Dorothy, Thomas, and Elizabeth. Roger left a will at PCC 26 Bennett (LDS Film #91906). 10. Edmund Lewknor, Esquire was born 16 November 1496 at Tangmere, Sussex, England and died there 11 March 1545. He married about 1532, Joan Tyrrell, born about 1510 and died before September 1557 at Racton, Sussex, daughter of Jasper and Anne (Goring) Tyrell. Joan married secondly John Gunter, Esquire by whom she had a son, Jasper. Edmund and Joan had six children: Elizabeth, Thomas, Anne, Richard, George, and Edmund. Edmund left a will at PCC 31 Pynning. 11. Elizabeth Lewknor was born 2 March 1533 at Tangmere, Sussex, England and died about 1577. She married about 1553, Thomas Stoughton, born 25 March 1521 at Stoughton, Surrey, England and died there 26 March 1578, son of Lawrence and Anne (Combes) Stoughton. Elizabeth and Thomas had four children: Lawrence, Adrian, Mary, and Catherine. Thomas was a member of Parliament twice in 1558 and 1572.
