			| In discussing the various theories of the origin of the Capets, we find it stated ( Vol. I. p. 407) with regard to Witikind, the supposed father of Robert le Fort, that " Conradus Urspergensis, Abbot of Lichtenau, proves that Witikind was no other than the great and heroic chieftain of the Saxon race." Now Conrad was a compiler of chronicles in the first half of the thirteenth century, and the opinion thus attributed to him is full three centuries younger. Conrad, copying Richerius, a writer of the tenth century, merely speaks of Robert's father as " Vuitikinum, ex Germania profugum " (anno 886) . |
