Notes

Dietrich von Haldensleben , also Theoderich († August 25, 985 ) was Count in Schwabengau , from 956 in North Thuringia , from 965 to 983 Margrave of North Mark and from 966 Count in Derlingau . Due to his lands and titles, he officially held the title of "Dux" from 968 , very powerful in the eastern part of the empire and is considered the progenitor of the Saxon noble family of Haldensleben .

life
With Dietrich, the von Haldensleben family, later named after their ancestral seat , becomes historically tangible, which was wealthy in northern Thuringia, west of today's Magdeburg and in Derlingau, east of Braunschweig . In 953, Dietrich proved to be a loyal general of King Otto I in the Liudolfinian Rebellion . He later appeared as a leader in the fight against the Elbe Slavs and as a count in northern Thuringia. In the reorganization of the dominions after the death of Margrave Geros in 965, he received the Saxon Nordmark. Together with Archbishop Adalbert of Magdeburgin 979 he organized the beheading of his competitor , Count Gero von Alsleben . According to Thietmar von Merseburg and later Saxon historians , Dietrich did not do justice to his task of further pacifying the areas won under Otto I by the Slavic Lutici and Heveller . Ultimately, he was not up to the task and his greed provoked the Lutica uprising of 983 , which broke down German-Saxon rule between the Elbe and the Oder . That this led to his deposition, 983, like Adam von Bremen and the Annalista Saxoreport is unlikely. He took part as a general in the Saxon victory at the Tangiers, and in the German succession dispute of 984 he was one of the opponents of Duke Heinrich of Bavaria . According to the Quedlinburg Annals , Dietrich died in 985.
