Roger first appeared in England during William the Conqueror's conquest of England, and became a powerful Earl in England. Roger and a relation, Robert, is thought to have fought at the Battle of Hastings, thusly rewarded with estates in East Anglia, now Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. The Domesday Book records Roger's holdings as 6 lordships in Essex, 117 in Suffolk and 187 in Norfolk. His base was at Thetford where he built the priory. Roger was appointed High Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk after Ralph de Gael's fall from his Earldom and grace in 1074. |
