213. Katharine late the wife of Thomas de Berkeleye, knight Writ, 24 March, 9 Richard II [1386] WORCESTER. Inq. taken at Great Malverne, Tuesday before St. Ambrose, 9 Richard II. She was seised in her demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned lands and rent. Clyvelode. A carucate of land, 20 a. meadow, 4 a. wood and 30s. rent of assise, together with the advowson of the church, held of the abbot of Westminster by knight’s service. She died on 13 March, 9 Richard II [1386]. John de Berkeley, knight, her son, aged 32 years and more, is her heir. 214. Writ, 24 March, 9 Richard II DEVON. Inq. taken at Plympton Earls, Monday before St. Ambrose, 9 Richard II. She held the under-mentioned messuages, etc. jointly with Peter de Veel, knight, her late husband, now deceased, by gift of Peter de Taunton, made to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Peter de Veel, by a fine levied in the king’s court in 10 Edward III. Plympton Earls. 20 messuages, 5 ferlings of land, 5 a. meadow, 2 a. wood and 16l. rent, held of the earl of Devon by service of 6d. or a pair of gilt spurs yearly. Date of death as above. John Moigne, knight, aged 32 years and more, is kinsman and next heir of the said Peter and Katherine in the entail aforesaid, to wit, son of Joan their daughter. 215. Writ, 24 March, 9 Richard II WILTS. Inq. taken at Aumbresbury, Thursday after St. Ambrose, 9 Richard II. She held the under-mentioned lands, etc. in Cheleworth and Colcote in fee, and long before her death demised them without the king’s licence to William Pokelchurche, to hold for life of her and her heirs by the said Thomas at a yearly rent of 4l. The saidWilliam is still in possession of the premises. She held the under-mentioned manor of Ablyngton and 20s. rent in Fygheldene jointly with Peter de Veel, knight, her late husband, by gift of Adam de Sharhull and Alice his wife made to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Peter, by a fine levied in the king’s court in 11 Edward III. She held the under-mentioned manor of Alton (except 1 a. land and the advowson of the church) jointly with the said Peter, her husband, by gift of Adam de Sharhull, knight, and Alice his wife made to them and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to Adam and Alice and the heirs of the latter, as appears by a fine levied in the king’s court in 16 Edward III. She held the under-mentioned manor of Penlegh and 1 a. land in Alton and the advowson of the church thereof jointly with Thomas de Berkeleye, knight, her late husband, by gift of the said Adam and Alice made to them for life, with successive remainders toJohn de Veel, now deceased, and the heirs of his body, to Joan sister of the said John, now deceased, and the heirs of her body, and to the heirs of the body of Katherine and Thomas, and with reversion in default of such heirs to Adam and Alice and the heirs of Alice, as appears by a fine levied in the king’s court in 24 Edward III. Cheleworth. A toft and a carucate of land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Colcote. 2 messuages, a carucate of land and 8 a. meadow, held of the king, as of the duchy of Cornwall, by knight’s service. Katherine died in seisin of the reversion of the premises and of the rent. John de Berkeleye, knight, aged 31 years and more, son of Thomas and Katharine, is next heir to the premises. Ablyngton. The manor, held of William Stormy, knight, by service of a sore sparrowhawk or 2s. yearly. Alton. The manor (except 1 a. land and the advowson of the church), held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Lancaster, by service of half a knight’s fee. Penlegh. The manor, and 1 a. land in Alton and the advowson of the church thereof. A hide of land, parcel of the said manor, is held of the prior of Farlegh by service of rendering 20s. yearly. The residue of the manor is held of Katherine de Norton by service of 5s. 1/2d. yearly. The 1 a. land in Alton and the advowson of the church are parcel of the manor of Alton. Date of death as above. John Moygne, knight, aged 32 years and more, is kinsman and next heir of the said Peter and Katherine in the entail aforesaid, to wit, son of Joan their daughter. John Veel, brother of the said Joan, died without heir of his body. Underwritten: Let delivery of the tenements in this inquisition remain in suspense. 216. Writ, 24 March, 9 Richard II SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Keynesham, 12 April, 9 Richard II. She held the under-mentioned manors and hamlet in her demesne as of fee, and the third part of a hundred in dower after the death of Thomas her husband, of the inheritance of Thomas son and heir of Maurice de Berkeley son and heir of her said husband, whois still living and is 31 years of age and more and is seised of two-thirds of the hundred. Netherhamme. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Exton. A fourth part of the manor, together with the advowson of the church thereof, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Hamme Bursy. The manor, held of the abbot of Glastonbury by knight’s service. Bererivell. The hamlet, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Bedmenstre. John de Berkeley, knight, her son, aged 32 years and more, is her heir. 217. Writ, 24 March, 9 Richard II GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Wotton Undiregge, Monday before St. Ambrose, 9 Richard II. She held the under-mentioned manors of Beverston, Tokynton, Overe and Compton Grenevill and the messuage and land in Kyngesweston jointly with Thomas de Berkeley of Berkeley, knight, her husband, in fee tail, by a gift and feoffment of William Syde, DavidMelksham and Walter Goldemere, chaplains, made to them and the heirs of their bodies by a fine levied in the king’s court, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Thomas. She held a third part of the hundred of Berkeley and the manors of Wotton Undiregge, Symondeshale and Camme in dower after the death of Thomas her husband, of the inheritance of Thomas son and heir of Maurice de Berkeley son and heir of her said husband. The said Thomas son of Maurice, aged 31 years and more, is her husband’s next heir. Beverston. The casde and manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Tokynton. The manor and the advowson of the chapel thereof, held of the heirs of Edward le Despenser, as of the honor of Gloucester, by knight’s service. Overe. The manor and the advowson of the chantry of a chapel there, held of the heirs of Edward le Despenser by knight’s service. Compton Grenevill. Two-thirds of the manor and the advowson of the chapel of the manor, and the reversion of a third part of the manor expectant on the demise of Isabel wife of William Stradlyng, knight, who holds it in dower for life, held of the bishop of Worcester, as of his manor of Hembury, by knight’s service.
