Miles de Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford and Lord of Brecknock, Sheriff of Gloucester, Constable of England

Miles was the son of Walter FitzRoger, Walter de Pitres, Walter of Gloucester, the hereditary Sheriff of Gloucester and Emma de Batedon. Some sources list his mother as Berta. Grandson of Roger de Pitres, also Sheriff of Gloucester.

Husband of Sybil de Neufmarche, the daughter of Bernard de Neufmarché, conqueror of Brecknock and Nest Verch Osborn Trahern, a great granddaughter of Gruffydd Llywelyn. They had the following children:
* Margaret, wife of Humphrey II de Bohun
* Bertha of Hereford, wife of William de Braose
* Roger FitzMiles, Earl, died 1155
* Walter de Hereford, died on a crusade
* Henry FitzMiles, died c 1162
* William of Hereford
* Mahel, died from a falling stone at Bronllys Castle
* Lucy, wife of Herbert FitzHerbert

Sybil's hand was given for marriage to Miles early in 1121, and he succeeded in his father's place by 1126. Miles was also a justice itinerant and justice of the forest. He ruled the entire Welsh border along with Pain FitzJohn. the Sheriff of Herefordshire and Shropshire. Miles' son, Roger, later married Cecily, the daughter of Pain FitzJohn, who inherited her father's lands and legacy.

In 1136, Miles was called to save Alice de Gernon, the widow of Richard FitzGilbert de Clare from the Owain Gwynedd who surrounded her in Cardigan Castle after the death of her husband. Miles rescued her most gallantly, and brought her home safely to England.

Miles served King Henry, and after Henry's death, sided with King Stephen who he received at his estate in May of 1138. Miles was with Stephen at the siege of Shrewsbury 1138, but changed sides away from Stephen to Matilda in 1139.

Miles proceeded to take and sack the city of Worcester, defending Wallingford Castle from Stephen's siege, captured the castles of Winchcombe, Cerne, and Hereford and was part of the victory at Lincoln in 1141. Matilda rewarded Miles with the earldom of Hereford.

On Christmas Eve of 1143, Miles was killed by an arrow to the head while deer hunting in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Both the canons of Llanthony and the monks of Gloucester quarreled over his body, their case heard by the Bishops of Worcester, Hereford and St David's, the decision was made Dec 28th and he was buried at Llanthony.

Miles's son, Roger, succeeded him but died without issue in 1155, their title becoming extinct.
