About 1328 he married Margaret de Prayers, Countess of Essex, daughter Thomas de Prayers and Margaret de Essex. Robert Bourchier, 1st Baron Bourchier was Lord Chancellor of England, the first layman to hold the post. In 1346 he accompanied King Edward III on his expedition to France. He was in command of a large body of troops, and fought at the battle of Crecy in the first division of the army.He founded a college at Halstead for eight priests; but it probably never housed that number, since its revenues were small. He died of the plague in 1349, and he and his wife were buried in St Andrew Church Halstead.
