Joseph Cushing, son of Thomas We only know about Joseph because he was mentioned in Thomas’ will. On databases I found the following two marriages which were confirmed in the parish registers: Joseph Cushing and Philadelphia Park were married 24th June 1678 Norwich St John Maddermarket Joseph Cushing of Hackford widower and Mary Park of Kimberly single woman married by licence 25th May 1725 Norwich St Giles When Thomas wrote his will Joseph had surviving children Frances, Christian, Faith and Joseph. We know that Frances was born in Hardingham in 1682, but the subsequent children’s baptisms are not recorded there. Since Joseph’s abode was given as Hackford at his second marriage, I looked at the Hackford (near Wymondham) baptisms register and found that the register prior to 1689 has been lost, but the one that has survived contained the following entries: Joseph, son of Joseph and Philadelphia Cushion, baptised 13th June 1689 Joseph, son of Joseph and Philadelphia Cushion, buried 1st December 1691 Philadelphia, daughter of Joseph and Philadelphia Cushion, baptised 1st March 1692 Christian Faith, daughter of Joseph Cushing was buried at Hardingham 20th May 1702 Anthony Daynes and Frances Cushing were married 13th November 1704 |

As usual, there was very little punctuation in the will and no commas separating the lists of children and that it why I initially misunderstood the names. The Hardingham burials record the following: Christian, daughter of Joseph Cushing, buried 20th May 1702 Philadelphia, wife of Joseph Cushing of Hackford, buried 5th March 1722/3 I did not search on for Joseph’s burial, but I would expect to find it in Hardingham post 1725, or if not, in Hackford. |
